Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), a prominent figure within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, has announced his decision to step back from the upcoming 2024 governorship election.

This marks the third time Jegede has contested for the position, having been the PDP's candidate in both the 2016 and 2020 elections.

Addressing his supporters across the state's 18 local government areas in Akure, the state capital, Jegede emphasized his unwavering commitment to the party's welfare and success. He expressed his willingness to make sacrifices aimed at resolving the party's challenges rather than exacerbating them.

"After thorough consultations and careful consideration, it became evident that we need to reassess our approach, focusing on aligning with prevailing sentiments regarding equitable representation, fairness, and justice, particularly concerning the governorship," Jegede stated.

He further highlighted the absence of zoning provisions in the party's constitution, emphasizing that past gubernatorial elections were determined by merit rather than geographical considerations. In light of this, Jegede underscored the necessity of reevaluating the path forward, considering the potential implications for both the party and the state.

"In view of the upcoming activities in our state and within the party, it is imperative to decide whether to repeat the process undertaken in 2016 and 2020," Jegede remarked.

Acknowledging the pool of competent governorship aspirants within the party, Jegede expressed his belief in the capabilities of these individuals to lead effectively. He emphasized the importance of providing them with an opportunity to participate in the primary election and, ultimately, to secure victory.

"It is time to afford these aspirants the chance to pursue their aspirations in the primary election, with the hope of emerging victorious. I pledge my full support to all aspirants, utilizing all available resources at my disposal," Jegede affirmed.

Jegede's decision to withdraw from the governorship race reflects his commitment to the PDP's collective goals and aspirations. As the party prepares for the upcoming electoral contest, Jegede's support for fellow aspirants underscores a spirit of unity and cooperation essential for achieving success at the polls.
