Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, a controversial street hop musician, has reached out to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) seeking forgiveness for his previous actions of spraying money on his fans.
His plea comes in the wake of the recent six-month jail sentence handed down to crossdresser Okuneye Idris, also known as Bobrisky, for a Naira Mutilation offense.
In the past, Portable had openly declared that he distributed nearly N2 million daily to his followers through money-spraying activities. However, in a recent live chat, he emphasized that his intentions were rooted in kindness and generosity towards his supporters.
Expressing apprehension about potential repercussions, Portable appealed to both the government and the EFCC for leniency, acknowledging his past actions of splattering cash but promising to refrain from such behavior in the future. He affirmed his commitment to encouraging his supporters to open bank accounts and conduct transactions through transfers rather than cash spraying.
"I didn’t deface the Naira. I help a lot of people. After God, it's the government. Please forgive me if you have videos of me spraying money. No more spraying of money," Portable stated.
The recent sentencing of Bobrisky has heightened awareness of the legal consequences associated with abusing the nation's currency. Bobrisky's six-month jail term, which commenced from March 24, 2024, following his guilty plea to charges of Naira abuse brought against him by the EFCC, serves as a stark reminder of the seriousness with which such offenses are treated by the judicial system.
As Portable seeks forgiveness and pledges to mend his ways, his actions reflect a growing awareness among public figures about the importance of compliance with financial regulations and the need to uphold the integrity of the nation's currency.
