Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has voiced concern over the increasing influence of state governments in manipulating the process of enthroning traditional rulers.

In a recent statement on his X handle, Atiku emphasized the importance of safeguarding traditional institutions from state government interference.

Atiku, who was the presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general election, highlighted that the stability of traditional institutions is crucial for maintaining peace and order within communities. He stressed that the current trend of state governments distorting the modalities of ascension for traditional stools is a growing issue across Nigeria.

He urged for constitutional reforms to formally recognize traditional institutions within the nation’s laws and clearly define their responsibilities. Atiku stated, “Recent developments in the country have seen a growing tendency of state governments exerting influence in distorting the modalities of enthroning traditional stools. It is a reality that stares us in the face from every corner of the country.”

While acknowledging that traditional rulership falls under the jurisdiction of state governments, Atiku argued that traditional institutions are a vital part of Nigeria's governance structure and must be shielded from arbitrary state actions. He warned that instability in the ascension process of traditional rulers could lead to difficulties in maintaining peace and order in communities.

“Although our constitution, in its current format, does not ascribe any recognition to traditional institutions, our experiences show clearly that they perform enormous roles in the economic life of their domains, as well as in maintaining peace and security in communities,” Atiku noted.

He also reminded Nigerians that traditional institutions were the primary governance structures before the colonial era and governed effectively. Atiku concluded by emphasizing the need to protect and preserve these institutions rather than allow their destabilization by state governments.

Atiku’s call for constitutional reform and protection of traditional institutions highlights a significant issue in Nigerian governance, advocating for a balanced approach that respects the historical and cultural importance of these entities.
