The Anambra State Government led by Prof Soludo has successfully razed the renowned "Olulu Eke Deity" in Ekwulobia to pave the way for the construction of a flyover at the town's roundabout.
This action follows Governor Soludo's earlier declaration of intent to dismantle the deity, a move that was met with resistance from its worshippers.
The Udo Olulu Eke deity holds profound significance for worshippers in Ekwulobia and the surrounding Aguata area. Even the Chief priest of Udo Olulu Eke Ekwulobia, known as Okenye (the Ancient One), had contested the government's motives. Okenye argued that if Governor Soludo believed the government owned the Udo Olulu Eke site in Ekwulobia, then any attempt to destroy or remove it should adhere to due process. He underscored the potential repercussions of a forceful demolition and clarified that he was merely conveying a message as instructed.
In a widely circulated video of the demolition, the operator of the caterpillar responsible for the task was observed placing a kola nut on the ground as a gesture of respect to the deity before proceeding with the demolition.
The dismantling of the Olulu Eke Deity aligns with the government's development agenda to facilitate the construction of the Ekwulobia flyover. While the plan is perceived as beneficial for the town, Governor Soludo has encountered opposition and received warnings regarding the potential ramifications of displacing the revered deity.
