In a display of respect and national unity, President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas joined other prominent figures to honor the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.

Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, at his burial. The solemn ceremony was held following the unexpected passing of Lt. Gen. Lagbaja in Lagos last week after a brief illness.

The event marked an extraordinary gesture, highlighting the collective tribute paid by the nation's highest-ranking officials. The attendance was seen as significant, especially in contrast to the absence of former President Muhammadu Buhari at the burial of his chief of staff during his administration. This move by President Tinubu underscored a shift towards a more personal engagement with national loss and the military community.

Adding to the recognition, President Tinubu posthumously conferred the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) on the late military leader. This prestigious award emphasized the nation's gratitude for Lagbaja’s service and contributions to national security.

Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, originally from Ilobu, Osun State, had served as the Chief of Army Staff for 17 months, having been appointed by President Tinubu. His dedication and leadership left a strong imprint on the Nigerian Army, making his sudden passing a significant loss.

The presence of top government officials at the burial, including the Chief of Staff and other dignitaries, signaled the profound respect and mourning shared across Nigeria for a man whose military service defined a chapter in the nation's defense history.
