On Thursday, First Lady and Senator Oluremi Tinubu fondly recalled her days as a student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, while expressing concerns about the loss of the campus's once breathtaking natural beauty.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 2.7km Senator Oluremi Tinubu Way and the unveiling of a pavilion and monument donated by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Mrs. Tinubu urged for immediate efforts to restore the environment. News360 Nigeria reports that she stressed the importance of reviving the greenery that she fondly remembered from her time at OAU.
Mrs. Tinubu attributed the decline in the campus’s landscape to poor maintenance and announced a generous donation of N1 billion to rejuvenate the horticultural landscape.
She said, “I will donate N1 billion for the OAU horticultural landscape to be restored. The campus used to be beautiful while I was here. Ife is crying out for help. It used to be a beautiful campus and the beauty must be restored.”
She expressed appreciation for the projects named after her by Oba Ogunwusi, noting that the event coincided with celebrations for the Ooni’s 50th birthday.
Earlier, Oba Ogunwusi explained that the projects, including the road and pavilion, were dedicated to Mrs. Tinubu in recognition of her tireless contributions to education, women’s empowerment, and national unity. He praised her leadership and dedication to humanity, adding, “A golden statue is erected to immortalize her virtuous person and to showcase the strength of a teacher, a mother, and a wife in her at the very heart of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.”
The royal father also highlighted the significance of the newly constructed 2.7km road, equipped with solar-powered street lamps, which will now be known as Senator Oluremi Tinubu Way. The largest hostel and pavilion in OAU’s history also bears her name, reflecting her continuous efforts to create opportunities for learning and development.
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, represented by his deputy, Kola Adewusi, reiterated his administration's commitment to improving infrastructure across the state. The event, marking Oba Ogunwusi’s milestone birthday, saw Mrs. Tinubu express her heartfelt gratitude for the recognition and honor given to her by the Ooni.
