During the altercation, Cynthia retreated into her one-room apartment and allegedly seized a kitchen knife, with which she inflicted fatal wounds on Barakat. The victim succumbed to her injuries, leading to a shocking scene at the public tap.

Neighbours, witnessing the tragedy, acted swiftly to apprehend Cynthia as she attempted to flee upon realizing the severity of the situation. Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, indicating that it was reported to the police by the late woman's husband, Lukmon Adio.

According to Hundeyin, Lukmon reported the murder case around 9.45 pm, narrating that his wife had a minor dispute with her neighbor, Cynthia Aigbondon, while fetching water at a nearby public borehole. This dispute tragically escalated, resulting in Cynthia stabbing Barakat with a kitchen knife on her left side.
