Renowned human rights advocate and former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof.
Chidi Odinkalu, has strongly criticized Nigeria' s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, and other high- ranking military officials following their visa denial by the Canadian High Commission.
The officers had applied for visas to travel to Canada for the Invictus Winter Games, but the applications were rejected.
Odinkalu expressed his dismay over the outrage displayed by the affected officials, stating that rather than being embarrassed over the visa denial, they should reflect on their actions. He argued that their indignation was misplaced, considering Nigeria' s worsening security situation, which demands their full attention rather than international sporting events.
Questioning The Justification For a Large Military Delegation
The human rights expert raised serious concerns about the rationale behind dispatching a contingent of over 70 senior military officers to a sporting event while the country faces escalating security crises. He noted that Nigeria, being a tropical country, has no significant connection to winter sports, making such a large military presence at the Invictus Winter Games highly questionable.
