President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his delight over the resumption of operations at the Warri Refinery, calling it a source of joy and renewed hope for Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Monday by Tinubu's spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President celebrated the revival of the state-owned Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company. This marks a significant achievement after years of extensive rehabilitation efforts.
A Key Step Towards Energy Security
The Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, had earlier announced that the refinery, which has a capacity of 125,000 barrels per day (bpd), is now operating at 60% capacity. President Tinubu lauded this progress, describing it as a vital step in his administration’s plan to enhance energy efficiency and security in Nigeria.
“This remarkable achievement strengthens the confidence of Nigerians in our administration and reaffirms our commitment to delivering a brighter, energy-secure future,” Tinubu stated.
Boosting Nigeria’s Refining Capacity
Tinubu commended the leadership of NNPCL under Mele Kyari for their dedication to restoring Nigeria’s reputation as a leading oil producer. He emphasized that the Warri Refinery will focus on producing critical petroleum products such as straight-run kerosene (SRK), automotive gas oil (AGO), and heavy and light naphtha.
“The restart of the Warri Refinery is a historic milestone, bringing joy to Nigerians and marking the end of 2024 on a high note. It complements the earlier revival of the Port Harcourt Refinery, showcasing the results of our strategic energy policies,” he added.
Call for Accelerated Efforts
President Tinubu urged NNPCL to expedite the rehabilitation of the Kaduna Refinery and the second Port Harcourt Refinery, which has a 150,000 bpd capacity. He emphasized the importance of positioning Nigeria as a hub for crude oil refining in Africa and a key player in the global energy market.
This achievement follows the earlier resumption of operations at the 60,000 bpd Port Harcourt Refinery on November 26, 2025, signaling a promising trajectory for Nigeria’s energy sector.
A Brighter Future for Nigeria
With the revival of the Warri Refinery and ongoing efforts to rehabilitate other refineries, President Tinubu’s administration is making bold strides toward ensuring energy security and economic growth. Nigerians can look forward to a more prosperous future with sustainable energy solutions.
