In a shocking incident, the Anambra State Government, acting through the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, has apprehended a 38-year-old woman named Chinyere Chukwu for attempting to sell her two sons.

Hailing from Okija in the Ihiala Local Government Area of the state, Chukwu collaborated with her 17-year-old daughter, Joy, in a distressing scheme to sell her two sons, citing "economic hardship in the country" as the driving force behind their actions.

Upon interrogation, Chukwu, a mother of 11, revealed that her inability to provide for all her children led her to the decision to sell two of them. The state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, took swift action, leading security operatives to apprehend the suspects after posing as potential buyers when the ministry received information about the transaction.

Chukwu confessed, stating, “I have 11 kids, and when I could not cater to them, I decided to sell two of them. Since they are boys, the prices were kept at N1 million each, but after serious bargaining by the commissioner, who posed as the buyer, we decided to sell them at N1.8 million, instead of the initial N2 million."

Shocked by this revelation, Obinabo ordered that the remaining children of the suspect be taken into the custody of the state government for proper care. She also expressed determination to apprehend the woman's neighbor, who had previously sold off her own child.

This distressing incident highlights the severe impact of economic challenges on vulnerable families, prompting authorities to take swift action to ensure the well-being of the remaining children and bring those responsible for such heinous acts to justice.
