Erik ten Hag's attempts to sign Barcelona fullback Sergino Dest during the summer were thwarted by Manchester United's football director, John Murtough.
During the summer transfer window, Barcelona had no use for the 21-year-old Dest as the Catalan powerhouses sought to raise money to sign some of their new players.
Ten Hag wanted to reunite with the American, who he managed at Ajax during the 2019-20 season.
The American international left Ajax in a deal worth around £18m to join Barcelona and was interested in a reunion with the right-back this summer.
The Athletic reports that Murtough wanted Aaron Wan-Bissaka to remain at Old Trafford and be part of the manager’s plans, despite ten Hag originally placing him on the transfer list.
Wan-Bissaka has only managed four minutes of action this season, coming off the bench in Manchester United’s win over Liverpool in August.
The England right-back was not even on the bench in United’s last two league games and was an unused substitute in the club’s Europa League match against Real Sociedad, with Diogo Dalot starting the season as ten Hag’s firm first choice.
