Ronald Waterreus, a former goalkeeper for Manchester City and the Netherlands, has criticized Barcelona over Frenkie De Jong's future at Camp Nou.



Barcelona was referred to as a "commercial monstrosity" by Waterreus, who also claimed that the LaLiga giants were using De Jong as ransom during the ongoing summer transfer window.

This summer, De Jong has been frequently linked to moves to Manchester United and Chelsea.

The 25-year-old, however, is largely thought to prefer staying at home in Barcelona.

De Jong faces a significant obstacle in determining his long-term future because Barcelona owes him €17 million in deferred wages.

De Jong has even been asked to almost cut his salary in half by the Blaugrana if he wants to stay at the team.

This summer, Barcelona added Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Franck Kessie, Raphinha, and Andreas Christensen despite their precarious financial situation. In response, Waterreus has taken aim at the Spanish club, saying Xavi's team is to blame for how ugly modern football is.

“I can no longer hear the slogan 'Més Que Un Club’ (more than a club). "Barcelona is a commercial monstrosity. In my eyes, it symbolizes everything that makes modern football so ugly,” Waterreus told Algemeen Dagblad.

“The way they’re now blackmailing Frenkie is a striking example of this." I hope he keeps his balance and stays, unless they harass him more and wreck his chances heading into the World Cup. So he'd better go to United...
