Manchester United have increased the salary of captain Harry Maguire, making it harder to sell the defender.
Maguire’s wages were bumped after the Red Devils qualified for the Champions League.
Erik ten Hag is looking to raise money from the sale of players so he can bring in a goalkeeper and center-forward.
Ten Hag began the window with a budget of about £120 million, just under half of which has been spent on the initial £55 million purchase of Mason Mount from Chelsea.
In line with the rest of United’s squad, Maguire was given a considerable wage rise after they finished in third place last season.
The 30-year-old has lost his first-choice status under Ten Hag, and the player and manager are open to parting ways.
Yet Maguire’s increased salary means potential buyers will struggle to convince him to take a pay cut.
