Lionel Messi came top of the votes once again to win the prestigious award after a very stiff contest. They all had a very successful year with Van Dyke winning the uefa men's best player some months ago because of his success in Europe where he helped his club Liverpool win the uefa champions league and also being the only defender in Europe with the highest number of successful tackles this year which made him a big favorite for the award. Cristiano Ronaldo on his side helped his club juventus win the seria A title where he also won the Italian seria A player of the season, he also helped his country win the uefa nations league this year which made him a favorite.

But it actually seems that Messi had the most successful season by individual achievement, asides from helping his club Barcelona win the La liga title, he also was the top scorer in Europe with the highest overall goal. Messi scored a total of 51 goals and 22 assists. 

Messi is now winning the award for the sixth time, one ahead of Ronaldo whom both have five apiece before. Messi now took over from the last year's winner luka Modric who actually ended the ronaldo messi dominance. Messi last won the individual award in 2015.

We now look forward to the next prestigious award in Europe which is the eufa Ballon d'or which will be coming up in some months time.
