According to ESPN, Manchester United is attempting to sign free agent goalkeeper Yann Sommer from Switzerland next summer.
When his deal with the German team expires at the end of the current campaign, Sommer will leave Borussia Monchengladbach.
The 33-year-old is wanted by United to join Erik ten Hag's team, and talks can start on January 1.
Ten Hag wants to upgrade his goalkeeping staff in preparation for the upcoming season.
After only making one first-team appearance at Old Trafford, Martin Dubravka, who was signed on loan during the most recent summer transfer window, is expected to return to Newcastle United.
David De Gea's long-term future will be questioned by the club's interest in Sommer, a member of the Swiss team that advanced to the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Although De Gea has been Ten Hag's top choice, the Red Devils have not yet begun contract negotiations.
The club has the option to extend the Spanish player's contract through the end of the current campaign to 2024.
De Gea’s limitations as a ball-playing goalkeeper saw him left out of Spain’s squad by coach Luis Enrique for the World Cup.
