Dimitar Berbatov has urged his former club Tottenham not to forget about big clubs coming in for Son Heung-min this summer, as they prepare to fend off bids for Harry Kane again.
Spurs fought hard to keep Kane out of the clutches of Manchester City throughout the whole of last summer after the England skipper revealed his intention for a fresh challenge elsewhere.
After a slow start to the campaign, Kane has been back to his best in recent months and rumours have started to circulate that he could be the subject of more offers at the end of the season.
However, City will not be making any bids after they secured the signing of Erling Haaland for the 2022-23 season.
Despite the noise around Kane’s future, Berbatov has urged Tottenham to keep a closer eye on clubs chasing Son.
The South Korean superstar has notched 21 goals and nine assists in 42 games in all competitions this season. Indeed, Son’s 20 Premier League strikes are only bettered by Mo Salah in the race for the Golden Boot.
And Berbatov hopes the outstanding attacker stays put.
He told Standard Sport: “It is interesting now because we all speak about Harry Kane, maybe in the summer we are going to see another soap opera like the one before, coming and going.
“But also Son is getting better and better with every season. So this is another dangerous situation, where all of a sudden maybe someone comes for your other striker, some other team offering you a lot of money.
“Then you are going to be in a situation where I and Keano (Robbie Keane) were back in the day. One was wanted by Liverpool and the other [Manchester] United. Then we were both gone.
“So in this case, with Son and Kane, it is a dangerous one because they are your top, top players in the team who can give you goals. If someone comes for them and offers you a lot of money, then what do you do? What do you do?
“But I know that Antonio Conte wants to keep them for sure. Because these are the stars that can produce those moments that make the difference.”
Conte the key to Tottenham success
Berbatov also hailed the work done by Conte since his arrival at the club in November.
Tottenham face a crunch clash with north London rivals Arsenal in the race for fourth spot on Thursday night.
And Berbatov believes Spurs can make great strides if the Italian stays put, amid talk he could join PSG.
The Bulgarian added: “I think he is doing a great job, in my opinion. I know that he is going to stay for the next season as well.
“The speculation is everywhere these days, especially about managers coming and going. It is a good thing that he came out and said he is going to stay when referring to the PSG stories.
“I hope that he is going to stay because in my opinion slowly but surely you can see that the team is getting better and better.
“They are constantly improving. Conte is a winner. Now maybe he is in a strange situation where the team didn’t win anything for a long time. But maybe that is a challenge that he wants. Maybe he is going to be the guy that brings that trophy [to Tottenham].”
