Alex Iwobi recently shared how a tough start at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations led former head coach Jose Peseiro to change the team's formation.
At the beginning of the tournament, the Super Eagles drew 1-1 against Equatorial Guinea, which wasn't a great start. Peseiro then decided to switch to a defensive 3-5-2 formation. This change paid off, as Nigeria secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over hosts Cote d'Ivoire in their next game.
The team continued to stick with this formation throughout the tournament, reaching the final where they unfortunately lost 2-1 to Cote d’Ivoire.
According to Iwobi, the team felt lucky to escape with a draw in the first game. The defensive formation gave them confidence, especially after winning the next game against the host nation. Despite reaching the final, they couldn't secure another victory over Cote d'Ivoire.
It's clear that the change in formation played a significant role in the team's journey in the tournament.
