Why The Rest of Europe Should be Worried the Champions League Could be Dominated by English Teams for the Foreseeable Future

There are only four Premier League teams joining the Champions League per year.

Yet, it looks like there are dozens of them. In fact, in the past three years, two Champions League finals looked like genuine Premier League contests, with only English sides. Looking deeper into the past, we’ll see that there was at least one English side in the semifinals in the last seven editions. Are we about to see an English takeover on the European stage?

Moneyball

English teams are about to become the golden standard in European football. It’s not the first time, and truth be told, other national leagues have been there before. The Spanish Liga has once dominated the stage, with Barcelona and Real Madrid. The Italians have also been there, with Inter Milan and AC Milan. What did all these teams have in common? Yes, you’ve guessed it right: a multi-millionaire lineup.

Now, it’s the Premier League’s turn, with Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, and Tottenham. The Top English teams seem to have the financial muscles they lack in other national leagues. Five out of ten of the richest clubs in Europe are English: Manchester City (1st), Manchester United (5th), Liverpool (7th), Chelsea (8th), and Tottenham (10th).

They’ve been buying stars from financially struggling teams in other leagues, making the gap even wider. Only Chelsea won’t be in this year’s Champions League, but it’s almost a sure presence for next year. Check the next European fixtures at the best platform for Online Sports betting in Africa.

The British Are Coming

Liverpool and Man City are having a smashing season at home, sitting comfortably 12 points atop the third place. Liverpool has a cosmopolitan lineup, with players coming from all over the world. The blue side of Manchester has also invested a lot in European talents, and it shows in its almost spotless home campaign.

Tottenham has undergone a few changes, and it’s on its way to finishing this year’s PremiLeague among the Top 4. After five months in the office, Antonio Conte has made signings that improved the team’s results. It’s only reasonable to expect the team to be even more in tune for the Champions League.

Things aren’t running smoothly for Manchester United, despite its impressive lineup. Cristiano Ronaldo seems to be at odds with Rangnick, and the defensive system is in disarray, as the last match against Liverpool proved. Anyway, once things are settled internally, the group has enough individual talent to scare any opponent.

Top Contenders

Indeed, few other European sides are comparable to the English teams. Read more about them below.

Bayern Munich

The German team is arguably the most capable of beating the English side. “Die Bayern” has recently won the trophy, and the team hasn’t changed much ever since. In 2020, Bayern Munich brought the trophy home after beating a star-studded Paris Saint-Germain in a nearly impeccable campaign. The team still counts on one of the most lethal (and expensive) strikers at the moment, Robert Lewandowski.

Paris Saint-Germain

Speaking of multi-millionaire lineups, PSG has Neymar, Mbappe, and Messi on its frontline. Even if it wasn’t enough to grant it the title against Bayern Munich two years ago, such a pool of talents could never be ignored. Mauricio Pochettiino is also well-aware that coming back home empty-handed may cost his job so we can expect a ferocious team for this season.

Real Madrid

Los Blancos may not be as galactic as a few years ago, but it still has a very strong team. Moreover, the veteran Carlo Ancelotti leads this talented and expensive group. So, Real Madrid should never be neglected. It still has plenty of stars in its team, such as Vinicius Junior, Benzema, and Asensio.

Barcelona

Barcelona is the fourth richest club in the continent and boasts a no less impressive team. It’s currently in the second position in one of the most disputed football leagues worldwide. Led by the young coach and former player Xavier Hernandez Creus, or simply Xavi, the team is having a great season at home. Despite the elimination from the Europa League, players are confident they can be champions at home and shouldn’t be underestimated.

Footbusiness

The most competitive teams on the European stage are also the richest ones (surprise, surprise). The Premier League now has five teams among the top ten richest teams in Europe, and it’s about to become the most important national league worldwide.

Last year, the Champions League finals were played by Manchester City and Chelsea. In 2019, Tottenham and Liverpool fought for the title. Are we likely to see more all-English finals from now on? Most probably, yes.
