At the age of 59, Artis Leon Ivey Jr.
, better known by his stage name Coolio, passed away.
The US rapper, who is also well-known for the timeless hit Gangsta's Paradise, was reportedly discovered unconscious on the bathroom floor of a friend's home in Los Angeles, according to the BBC.
Although the precise reason for his death on Wednesday is still unknown, the artist's longtime manager, Jarez Posey, who broke the news, said paramedics thought the artist may have suffered a cardiac arrest.
"Gangsta's Paradise," which was featured on the soundtrack for the Michelle Pfeiffer-starring film "Dangerous Minds," earned Coolio a Grammy.
In the course of a career spanning more than four decades, Coolio released eight studio albums, took home three MTV Video Music Awards, and won an American Music Award.
Snoop Dogg, MC Hammer, and Ice Cube were among the US music legends who expressed shock at Coolio's untimely death when they shared their sorrow on social media.
Coolio was referred to by MC Hammer as "one of the nicest dudes I've known."
Snoop Dogg referenced Coolio’s world-famous track in his own tribute, writing: “Gangstas paradise. RIP."
“This is sad news. "I witnessed first-hand this man’s grind to the top of the industry,” fellow rapper and actor Ice Cube said.
