Ontario Premier Doug Ford has warned that China is enjoying the ongoing trade war between the United States and Canada, emphasizing the need for both nations to settle their differences swiftly.
In an exclusive interview with ABC News’ Kyra Phillips, Ford stressed the urgency of resolving trade tensions, highlighting how the imposed tariffs are negatively impacting businesses and citizens on both sides of the border.
US-Canada Trade War Hurting Both Economies
Ford pointed out that the United States and Canada share one of the world’s most integrated supply chains. He warned that the tariffs are causing economic harm by disrupting this vital trade relationship.
“We’re the two closest allies in the world,” Ford stated. “As we engage in this back-and-forth, China is laughing. They’re strengthening their hold on critical minerals, controlling nearly 90% of some key resources globally.”
He further highlighted that the ongoing dispute is contributing to economic instability, with stock markets tumbling, consumer confidence plummeting, and inflation on the rise.
Ford Urges Americans to Speak Up
Calling for immediate action, Ford urged American citizens to pressure their representatives.
“Call your congressperson, your senator, your governor, and voice your opinion. This trade war is hurting people on both sides of the border,” he insisted.
Negotiation Is the Best Solution
The Ontario Premier underscored that diplomacy is the only way to resolve the issue.
“We need to sit down across the table and work it out instead of escalating the situation,” Ford advised. “Going tit for tat isn’t the answer.”
He also acknowledged that US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick has extended an olive branch, urging Canadian officials to come to the table. “If someone reaches out in good faith, it would be foolish not to engage,” Ford said.
Ford Unfazed by Trump’s Tough Stance
Despite tensions, Ford remains undeterred by former US President Donald Trump’s aggressive trade policies.
“Trump doesn’t scare me,” Ford said. “He’s a smart businessperson and a shrewd negotiator.”
Ford has been a vocal critic of US tariffs, calling them an “unprovoked attack” and “unacceptable.”
Ontario Takes Action Against US Tariffs
In response, Ontario has suspended electricity surcharges on energy exports to several American states, including Michigan, Minnesota, and New York.
A high-level meeting between Ford and Lutnick is scheduled for Thursday in Washington, D.C., where both parties are expected to discuss possible resolutions to the trade conflict.
