Senegal's political landscape is poised for change as opposition candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a newcomer to the political scene and a favorite among the country's disenchanted youth, is set to be declared the next president.

This comes after his main rival made the pivotal decision to concede defeat on Monday.

According to provisional results released by the electoral commission, Faye secured approximately 53.7% of the vote, with his main opponent, Amadou Ba, from the ruling coalition, trailing behind with 36.2%. These figures, based on tallies from 90% of polling stations in the first-round vote, indicate a clear lead for Faye.

Both Ba and President Macky Sall extended their congratulations to Faye, highlighting the outcome as a victory for Senegal and its democracy. Ba remarked, "The Senegalese people have reinforced the good health of our democracy... I wish him (Faye) success at the head of our country."

A smooth transition of power in Senegal would not only signify a triumph for democracy but also serve as a positive development for West Africa, a region plagued by political instability. In recent years, the area has witnessed numerous military coups, with some regimes shifting alliances away from traditional partners like France and the United States towards countries like Russia in the fight against jihadist insurgency.

Reports of Faye's imminent victory prompted a surge in Senegal's international bonds, indicating investor confidence in the country's political stability. Many are hopeful that the election will usher in a period of calm and economic growth following years of political unrest and anti-government protests.

As street celebrations erupted in anticipation of Faye's victory, Senegal's citizens expressed optimism for the future. "I am happy to see there is a wind of change," remarked one opposition supporter, reflecting the widespread sentiment that democracy has prevailed.

While full and official results are expected to be announced by the Dakar appeals court on Friday, the impending presidency of Bassirou Diomaye Faye represents a significant milestone in Senegal's political journey.
