Heartbreak enveloped the Gurara Albishir area of Niger State as tragedy unfolded last Sunday in the community that, claimed the lives of five young souls, three of whom were siblings.
The incident, shrouded in sorrow, saw three children from the same parents and two others, aged between five and 10 years, meet a tragic end inside an abandoned Honda Civic bearing Registration No. GO 778 ABC.
The harrowing mishap occurred when the children unwittingly found themselves trapped within the confines of the deserted vehicle. Report have it that the car has been left untouched for two years prior to the incident, the Honda Civic became an unwitting tomb, sealing the fate of the youngsters who ventured inside, only to succumb to suffocation after hours of confinement.
An eyewitness, Bala Usman, recounted the heart-wrenching sequence of events, revealing how the children's innocent play turned tragic. "They tried to open the car and it refused to open, and so they gave up trying. The car had been parked there for about two years by the owner," lamented Usman. The children, inadvertently locking themselves inside around 11 am, remained undiscovered until 4 pm, when their lifeless bodies were tragically uncovered by their anguished parents.
Among the victims were three siblings - Zahra (10), Aisha (seven), and Fati (five) - alongside two others, Isah (seven) and an unnamed fifth victim, who shared the cruel fate of suffocation within the forsaken vehicle.
Aminu Ladan, Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Area, expressing his condolences and acknowledging the gravity of the incident. "This is a very unfortunate incident, I must tell you. We pray for the families to be comforted at a time like this," lamented Aminu, who visited the scene to offer solace and support to the grieving families.
