Prominent human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has been granted bail by the Ekiti State High Court following his arrest by the Ekiti State Police Command.
The court set bail at ₦50 million, with a requirement for a surety of the same amount. The surety must also own a landed property.
The case, which has drawn nationwide attention, stems from allegations of defamation leveled against Farotimi by legal icon Chief Afe Babalola (SAN). The 95-year-old senior advocate claims that Farotimi defamed him in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.
Farotimi’s arrest sparked widespread condemnation, with civil society organizations and the Nigerian Bar Association demanding his immediate release. Activists decried the detention as an attack on free speech and a blow to the legal profession.
The court has adjourned further proceedings to January 29, 2025, leaving many eager to see how this high-profile case unfolds.
