The Anambra State AIDS Control Agency and the state Ministry of Health, it has been revealed that a significant number of individuals, precisely 98,960, are living with HIV/AIDS in the state.
The state Commissioner for Health, Afam Obidike, shared these statistics during a media briefing held in Awka on Thursday, as part of the preparations for the upcoming 2023 World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1.
Obidike emphasized the state's notable progress towards achieving the Global 95-95-95 targets, indicating that Anambra State is currently ranked as the fifth highest in HIV prevalence within the country. Despite the national prevalence standing at 1.4%, Anambra's HIV prevalence takes the lead in the South-East region.
He stated, "It is estimated that 98,960 residents are living with HIV, out of which 58% are aware of their status, and 44,808 are currently on treatment." The commissioner highlighted that the state is on a positive trajectory towards meeting the Global 95-95-95 targets, currently standing at 65:81:93.
A notable achievement mentioned by Obidike is the gradual decline in new infections, showing a 46% reduction between 2021 and 2023. Additionally, AIDS-related deaths have witnessed a 32% decrease during the same period, reflecting the state's commitment to addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
As Anambra State gears up to observe World AIDS Day, these statistics shed light on both the challenges faced and the progress made in the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS.
