A district court in Lahti, Finland, has ordered the imprisonment of Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), for public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent in Nigeria.
Ekpa, a controversial figure known for his separatist rhetoric, has been accused of using social media to spread IPOB-related propaganda advocating for the secession of southeastern Nigeria. The court alleges that his offences date back to August 23, 2021.
Finnish authorities also suspect Ekpa of promoting acts that have led to violence against civilians and authorities in southeastern Nigeria. Otto Hiltunen, the crime commissioner of Finland's Central Criminal Police, confirmed that Ekpa’s activities involved incitement to violence, largely propagated through his social media platforms.
This isn’t the first time Ekpa has faced scrutiny. In February 2023, he was arrested by Finnish police for alleged financial crimes, including the unlawful collection of funds. Although he was released after questioning, suspicions about his activities persisted.
The latest arrests extend beyond Ekpa, as four other individuals, all of foreign backgrounds, have been detained on suspicion of financing terrorism. Born in the 1960s and 1970s, these individuals allegedly committed their crimes in Lahti in August 2022.
The investigation highlights significant international cooperation between Finnish authorities and other nations, reflecting the global effort to combat cross-border terrorism. Helsingin Sanomat reported that five suspects were arrested during the initial stages of the probe.
Ekpa’s imprisonment adds a new dimension to the ongoing conflict involving IPOB and the Nigerian government. The group’s separatist agenda has been marred by accusations of violence, and Ekpa’s role as a prominent online voice for the movement has drawn widespread criticism.
