Embattled Nigerian rapper, Speed Darlington, has taken legal action against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, accusing the police of violating his fundamental rights.
The controversy began when Darlington was arrested and detained over alleged defamatory and cyberstalking comments about fellow artist Burna Boy. Despite being granted bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja on December 23, 2024, the rapper remained in police custody, sparking outrage.
In a viral social media video, Darlington’s lawyer, Abubakar Marshal, accused Burna Boy of orchestrating his prolonged detention by allegedly bribing the police.
After weeks of legal battles, the court on Monday, January 6, 2025, ordered Darlington’s immediate release. Hours after regaining his freedom, the rapper filed a lawsuit demanding N300 million in damages from the IGP for his unlawful detention and the violation of his rights.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled January 13, 2025, to hear the case. The adjournment came after Garba Audu, the police’s legal representative, requested additional time to respond to the suit.
Stay tuned as this high-profile legal showdown unfolds. Will Darlington get justice, or will the police defend their actions?
