The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Comrade Usman Okai Austin, a former House of Representatives member for the Dekina/Bassa federal constituency, in what has been described as a gestapo-style operation.
Renowned activist and politician Omoyele Sowore broke the news on X, condemning the arrest and accusing the DSS of acting as mercenaries for Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo.
Sowore wrote:
"Imagine how these lawless @OfficialDSSNG mercenaries are abducting, torturing, and dehumanizing a Nigerian citizen, @Austinokai, just because he expresses himself against illegitimate Gov. Ododo of Kogi State. #RevolutionNow #FreeAustinOkaiNow"
He further demanded Okai's immediate release, warning against the use of security agencies for political suppression.
Okai’s Outspoken Criticism of Ododo’s Government
Okai has been a fierce critic of Governor Ododo’s administration, frequently calling out its alleged misdeeds. Recently, he urged Ododo to rein in Kogi State’s Accountant General, Habiba Onumoko, accusing her of financial mismanagement and overstepping her constitutional role.
According to Okai, Onumoko and her associates have hijacked key decisions in Ododo’s government, turning it into a “cabal-controlled” administration.
Growing Calls for Okai’s Release
The arrest has sparked outrage among political activists and Nigerians demanding his freedom. With mounting pressure on the DSS, the question remains—will the government bow to public demand and release Usman Okai Austin?
