Mr Tony Aziegbemi, the chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state, was abducted by a group of armed assailants near his residence in Benin City.

However, there is a glimmer of hope as he has been safely released from captivity in the early hours of Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

Aziegbemi's return to his home in Benin City around 3 a.m. marks the end of a frightening episode that began when he was seized by gunmen. The news of his release was confirmed by Crusoe Osagie, the special adviser for media projects to the Edo State Governor, in a telephone conversation with Channels Television.

A former member of the House of Representatives, Aziegbemi represented the Esan North-East/Esan South-East federal constituency of Edo State. Reports indicate that his abductors, traveling in two Toyota Corolla cars, ambushed him on the night of Friday, March 16, 2024.

The gunmen intercepted Aziegbemi’s sports utility vehicle (SUV) along Osaro Street around 11 p.m., plunging him into a terrifying ordeal that lasted over a week. Now, with his release, there is a collective sigh of relief as the community welcomes him back to safety.

As details of the kidnapping emerge and investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the security challenges faced by many in the region. It also underscores the resilience and determination of individuals like Aziegbemi in the face of adversity.

As the community rejoices in his safe return, thoughts turn to efforts to enhance security measures and protect citizens from similar incidents in the future.
