The Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has achieved significant milestones with the recent convictions and sentences handed down to individuals involved in impersonation and fraud cases.
Abdulazeez Isah, who falsely presented himself as a staff member of the EFCC, has been sentenced to three years in prison following his guilty plea to a one-count charge of impersonation. This development was disclosed by Dele Oyewale, the Head of Media and Publicity for the EFCC, in a statement released on Thursday.
In separate judgments, Justices Darius Khobo and A. Isiaka of the Kaduna State High Court, sitting in Kaduna, handed down convictions to Abraham Adama and Uzoma Isaac Iwu for their involvement in fraudulent activities.
Justice Isiaka sentenced Abdulazeez Isah after he pleaded guilty to the charge of impersonation, a violation of Section 142(1) of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017. Meanwhile, Justice Khobo delivered a two-year imprisonment term to Abraham Adama for cheating by impersonating American movie star Sylvester Stallone on social media. Additionally, Uzoma Isaac Iwu received a three-year sentence for cybercrimes.
The charges against the convicted individuals outline the specifics of their offenses. Abdulazeez Isah was charged with falsely presenting himself as an EFCC staff member to the public. Abraham Adama, using the alias Sylvester Stallone, engaged in cheating by impersonation, defrauding unsuspecting victims through various online social media applications. Uzoma Isaac Iwu was charged with assuming the character of Man Paul Markus and defrauding the public by luring them into investing in cryptocurrency via his email address [email protected].
The convictions underscore the EFCC's commitment to combating impersonation and fraudulent activities, sending a strong message that such actions will not be tolerated. The sentences handed down serve as a deterrent and a step towards ensuring a safer online environment for the public.
