In an unexpected turn of events, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has been declared a "wanted" person by Russia.
This controversial decision was revealed on Tuesday when Russia's interior ministry included Kallas in a database, listing her as "wanted under the criminal code."
The Estonian State Secretary Taimar Peterkop and Lithuania's Culture Minister Simonas Kairys also found themselves on this unprecedented wanted list.
The charges against Kallas and the Baltic lawmakers are reported to be linked to the destruction of Soviet-era monuments. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov clarified the accusations, stating that they were on the wanted list for their alleged hostile actions against Russia and the "desecration of historical memory."
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a Russian security source informed TASS news agency that the trio is being prosecuted for their involvement in "destroying monuments of Soviet soldiers" from World War II.
Notably, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has been an outspoken supporter of Ukraine since Russia's invasion in February 2022. She has consistently advocated for Ukraine's right to defend itself against the Russian aggression. Within the European Union and NATO, Kallas has emerged as one of the strongest voices calling for increased support for Ukraine, particularly in the form of providing more arms to the war-torn nation.
As tensions escalate with Russia placing Kallas on the wanted list, the situation adds a complex layer to the geopolitical landscape and raises concerns about the broader implications of these accusations against the Estonian Prime Minister. The international community will undoubtedly closely monitor developments and reactions in the coming days.
