The Federal Government has taken a significant step towards enhancing transportation infrastructure in Nigeria by ordering the linking of the Port Harcourt-Aba rail line to the Port Harcourt and Onne Ports in Rivers State.

This move comes as the construction of the rail line has reached an advanced stage of completion.

Senator Saidu Alkali, the Minister of Transportation, made this announcement during a discussion with journalists in Port Harcourt after inspecting the progress of the Port Harcourt-Aba Railway track reconstruction. He revealed that while the commencement of train operations along the route was initially slated for March 2024, technical issues have necessitated a postponement to April.

Expressing his disappointment at the delay in meeting the March deadline, Senator Alkali emphasized the importance of honoring commitments in infrastructure projects. However, he acknowledged the complexities involved in such endeavors and assured that the government remains steadfast in its commitment to completing all rail line projects across the country, despite financial challenges.

The minister highlighted the government's efforts to address financing issues inherited from previous administrations, emphasizing the necessity of securing proper funding arrangements before commencing projects of such magnitude.

In conclusion, the linking of the Port Harcourt-Aba rail line to the ports signifies a significant milestone in the development of Nigeria's transportation infrastructure. Despite challenges, the government's determination to enhance connectivity and facilitate efficient freight operations remains unwavering.
