Elias Igboayaka Dikeigbo, a suspected kidnapping kingpin in Orlu, was arrested by the police on Saturday.
His arrest followed a tip-off to the local vigilante group in his Umuna community, which had previously detained some of his gang members. During interrogations, these members identified Elias as their leader.
Elias has been transferred from the Orlu Division of the Nigeria Police to the Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the state’s Command in Owerri.
Serving as the Community Youth Leader of his town, Elias has been implicated in numerous criminal activities in Orlu and surrounding areas. He has been on the police wanted list for a series of armed robberies, including a recent kidnapping and the hijacking of a truck loaded with stockfish. Following these incidents, Elias went into hiding, and during this time, his wife and some kinsmen were arrested and taken to Awka in Anambra State.
Despite having no visible legitimate business, Elias is suspected of acquiring properties through illegal activities. Many in the community, including his family and traditional rulers, were aware of his dubious lifestyle but were too afraid to speak out.
Upon the arrest of his gang members, they freely confessed and identified Elias as their leader. A police source indicated that the suspects would be further questioned by the Anti-Kidnapping Department in Owerri to determine their involvement in various criminal activities, particularly kidnappings.
Residents of Orlu expressed relief and gratitude to both the vigilante group and the police for their efforts. They urged authorities not to release Elias back into society, as has reportedly happened following previous arrests.
Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Imo Police Command, Mr. Henry Okoye, were unsuccessful due to network issues.
Elias Dikeigbo previously served as the Special Assistant on Motor Parks for the Orlu zone under the immediate past Governor of Imo State, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha.
