A tragic incident occurred on Friday night, May 31, along the Awka-Onitsha Expressway in Anambra, where a driver struck and killed a female pedestrian.
The driver fled the scene following the collision, according to the Anambra State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Commander of the FRSC in Anambra, Mr. Adeoye Irelewuyi, addressed the press in Awka on Saturday, June 1, stating that the likely cause of the accident was speeding. The accident involved an unidentified driver of a Toyota Hiace commercial bus with no registration number, heading towards Upper Iweka, Onitsha.
"Eyewitness reports indicate that the speeding driver rammed into a female adult pedestrian and then fled the scene," said Irelewuyi. "The FRSC rescue team arrived promptly and transported the victim to Toronto Mortuary after a doctor confirmed her death."
Expressing condolences to the victim's family, Irelewuyi also cautioned motorists about the dangers of speeding, particularly during the rainy season. He urged all drivers to adhere to specified speed limits to prevent such tragedies.
