A heart-wrenching incident occurred in the Ajamgbadi area of Lagos State as a woman and her two children lost their lives in a fatal hit-and-run accident.
The tragic event unfolded on Saturday around 8:30 pm at 77 Bus Stop Shibiri Imude Road, Ajamgbadi.
The 29-year-old driver behind the wheel of the ash-coloured Toyota Camry, identified as Oluwatimilehin Olajide, is not only a motor mechanic but also the alleged perpetrator of the accident. According to reports, the driver fled the scene when an enraged mob attempted to take matters into their own hands and retaliate against him. Seeking refuge, Olajide sought shelter at a nearby police post.
An eyewitness shared details of the devastating incident with PUNCH Metro, stating that the car was speeding when it struck the woman and her two children, resulting in immediate fatalities. The eyewitness mentioned, "The driver was at a high speed when the car rammed into the woman and her two children. The trio died instantly. The driver of the car took off with his car. I guess he was scared of the boys there who wanted to lynch him. They, however, chased after him."
Confirming the incident, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, provided additional information. He stated that Olajide admitted to the accident and sought refuge at the Shibiri Police Post as the mob gathered, seeking retribution. The mob pursued him to the police station, with intentions that escalated to the destruction of the car and threats to set both the police post and the vehicle ablaze if the suspect was not handed over to them.
This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and the importance of road safety. The community is left grappling with the aftermath of the accident, highlighting the need for heightened awareness and measures to prevent such devastating events in the future.
