Renowned singer and leader of the Obidient movement, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has opened up about his early involvement in scamming, predating the notorious 419 fraud that later became widespread in Nigeria.
In the latest episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, co-hosted by actor Chinedu Ani Emmanuel, also known as Nedu, Charly Boy shared insights into his past, revealing that he engaged in scamming banks before the 419 phenomenon gained notoriety. Advance fee fraud, commonly known as "419 fraud," involves a sender seeking assistance in facilitating the illegal transfer of money, typically promising the victim a substantial share of a large sum in return for a small upfront payment. Charly Boy disclosed that he had experience with such activities before they became widely recognized.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Charly Boy discussed the influence of his father, the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, on his life. He highlighted how his father's emphasis on religion and religiosity had a profound impact on him.
“I spoil from belle because at 16, I don born. My first son is almost 53. I was scamming banks even before una begin hear of 419, I don do small. My papa, when I dey small he damage me with religion and religiousity,” Charly Boy shared during the podcast.
While Charly Boy had previously stated in August 2022 that marriage is a lifetime sentence, he further elaborated on the challenges and commitment required for a lasting marriage in a subsequent interview with Saturday Beats.
"Some people are asking me how I have managed to stay in marriage for 45 years. It is hard work. It is not that it has entirely been a sweet experience for me. My marriage is not perfect but we are a perfect match made in heaven," Charly Boy explained. He emphasized the misconception that love alone is sufficient for a successful marriage, urging people to think deeper about the complexities involved. As he celebrated his 45-year marriage, he humorously remarked, "What remains again? I can as well finish 10 or 20 more years because it is a life sentence."
