In a bold move early Tuesday morning, women from the Ipo community blocked the entrance to Port Harcourt airport.
By 7:30 am, these women, representing one of the airport’s host communities, had gathered at the airport roundabout gate, waving placards, singing, wailing, and even cooking at the gate.
Their banners carried messages such as "We Demand Our Citizens' Rights" and "Ipo Women Peaceful Protest," reflecting their grievances. The women aimed to draw government attention to the dire lack of basic amenities in their community, including electricity, good roads, and adequate schools, despite their proximity to the airport.
Channels Television reported that the protest caused significant traffic disruption, preventing passengers from accessing the airport.
This marks the second protest by the Ipo women this year. Their previous demonstration on March 27 was temporarily resolved when they were addressed by Sergeant Awuse, the former Chairman of the Rivers Traditional Rulers Council. However, the recurrence of this protest underscores the community’s ongoing frustration and demand for action.
