Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a couple attempting to sell their two-year-old son in a bid to fund their move to Canada.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Lagos. The couple, aged 28 and 22, were apprehended on Tuesday while trying to carry out the sale.
According to Hundeyin, around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, the Isolo Divisional Police Officer received a tip-off that the couple had gone to Isolo General Hospital, expressing their intention to sell their baby boy. Acting swiftly, the operatives from the station intervened at the hospital where the couple was about to complete the transaction.
The two-year-old boy has been rescued and is safe. During interrogation, the couple confessed that they had planned to sell their child to enable the father to travel to Canada in search of better opportunities.
"The investigation is ongoing," Hundeyin added, emphasizing that the authorities are thoroughly examining the case.
