The Lagos State Government has issued a crucial advisory to all public establishments, including beaches and swimming pools, emphasizing strict adherence to the Lagos State Swimming Pool Regulations of 2021.

This directive aims to safeguard the well-being of residents and visitors partaking in aquatic activities across the state.

Mr. Lanre Mojola, the Director General of the Safety Commission, conveyed the urgency of this advisory over the weekend, citing a concerning surge in drowning incidents resulting in tragic loss of lives in recent weeks. These distressing occurrences have been reported in various settings, including hotel swimming pools, beaches, and the lagoon.

In light of these unfortunate events, the government extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and reaffirms its commitment to preventing further tragedies. The Lagos State Swimming Pool Regulations, established to foster a sustainable safety culture, outline essential safety policies, standards, and practices. Key provisions include the deployment of trained lifeguards, conspicuous signage, standardized incident reporting protocols, and restrictions on alcohol consumption and fire hazards around pool areas.

Mr. Mojola stressed the paramount importance of full compliance with these regulations by all operators of public swimming facilities to mitigate the risk of future incidents. To this end, the government urges facility operators to:

1. Ensure the presence of certified lifeguards during operational hours.

2. Clearly display safety rules and emergency procedures for patrons.

3. Conduct routine safety audits and maintenance checks to uphold safety standards.

4. Equip facilities with appropriate safety gear, including comprehensive first aid kits.

5. Enforce strict adherence to safety guidelines by all patrons to promote a culture of safety and responsibility.

By prioritizing adherence to these regulations and implementing stringent safety measures, public facilities can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents and ensure the well-being of individuals engaging in aquatic activities across Lagos State. The collaborative effort between government authorities and facility operators is essential in fostering a safe and enjoyable environment for all residents and visitors alike.
