On Monday morning, a man identified as Shuaibu Yushau was arrested by Nigerian police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, after attempting to commit suicide atop a radio mast.
The incident was initially reported by SaharaReporters, which noted that Yushau was seen at the top of the mast in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, trying to end his life.
A video of the scene circulated online, along with a suicide note left by Yushau. Prompt action was taken as relevant agencies, including the Fire Service, National Emergency Management Agency, and Federal Capital Territory officials, were deployed to rescue him.
The rescue operation was successful, and Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT command, confirmed in a statement on Monday evening that Yushau is currently in police custody and in stable condition.
The police were alerted around 9:10 AM by concerned citizens who saw Yushau with a placard at ASO Radio in Katampe. FCT Police Command operatives swiftly mobilized to the scene and, through professional persuasion, managed to prevent Yushau from taking his own life. Yushau admitted to having observed the mast for about a week before deciding to climb it.
