The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has expressed strong criticism of President Bola Tinubu's administration as it marks one year in office.
In its assessment, the NNPP highlighted significant concerns about the effectiveness of the government's Renewed Hope Agenda, suggesting it has not delivered the anticipated benefits and has instead caused considerable hardship for the populace.
Oladipo Johnson, the NNPP's national publicity secretary, issued a statement urging the Federal Government to urgently review its economic policies to better align with the prevailing sufferings of the people and enhance productivity across the country.
The party pointed to various economic indicators and performance indices, noting that they fail to inspire confidence among Nigerians. "The renewed hope now looks like a feeble orchestration, hope is dimming," the statement read.
Citing data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the NNPP highlighted the alarming inflation rate, which now stands at 33.69 percent—the highest in 28 years—and food inflation at 40.53 percent as of April. "This is not comforting in any way," the party emphasized.
The NNPP also drew attention to the ongoing fiscal crisis, including the devaluation of the naira and the government's significant borrowing from local and international institutions. The party called for a careful review of these economic strategies, stressing the need for prudent resource management.
Additionally, the NNPP advocated for a substantial reduction in the cost of governance and a stronger focus on addressing corruption, ensuring accountability, and curbing financial leakages. The party emphasized the importance of prioritizing spending to reflect the nation's current needs rather than engaging in wasteful expenditures.
"While education and health are particularly underfunded, we see much wasteful application of scarce resources in less important activities, suggesting misplaced priorities," the statement concluded.
