Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the upgrade of Ibadan Domestic Airport, Alakia, to an international airport.
The announcement was made on Wednesday at the state’s Government House in Ibadan.
In a video circulating on social media, Governor Makinde stated, “The President has graciously approved my request for the upgrade of Ibadan Airport to an International Airport.”
This development follows the ninth Senate's resolution urging the Federal Ministry of Aviation and other relevant authorities to upgrade the Ibadan Domestic Airport to international status. The resolution was prompted by a motion presented by Senator Kola Balogun (PDP-Oyo South) during a plenary session, highlighting the need to modernize the airport's facilities.
The motion, co-sponsored by 37 senators, emphasized Ibadan's potential to attract significant economic development both locally and internationally.
Senator Balogun argued that upgrading the airport with modern facilities would propel the region's tourism sector and provide essential communication links. He noted, “Hosting an international airport in Ibadan will propel the tourist sector and provide a communication link which is vital between different groups of people involved within the region. The upgrade will also attract foreign investments to the region and ultimately increase the gross domestic product of Nigeria.”
