The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi has responded to allegations of betrayal made by Barrister Julius Abure, the party’s embattled national chairman.

The accusations surfaced during a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Monday, where Abure accused Obi and Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti of plotting against him. Abure claimed that the two leaders orchestrated a stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, where former Finance Minister Esther Nenadi Usman was elected as chairperson of a 29-member caretaker committee to resolve internal party issues.

Peter Obi, speaking through Comrade Ibrahim Umar, the spokesperson for Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), expressed disappointment in Abure’s allegations. "I am disappointed, but not surprised, by the false accusations of betrayal against our principal, Mr. Peter Obi, by Julius Abure. It is clear that this is a politically motivated attempt to mislead the public," Umar stated.

Obi clarified that the stakeholders' meeting held in Umuahia was aimed at addressing the ongoing leadership crisis within the Labour Party and that the decisions made were in the party’s best interest, not a personal vendetta. “The Obidient Movement stands in total solidarity with the actions and decisions of the stakeholders, which have always been guided by a commitment to unity, justice, and transparency,” Umar affirmed.

Umar further criticized Abure for defaming Obi’s character and misleading the public, stating that Abure's refusal to step down at the end of his tenure in June has caused unnecessary tension. He emphasized that Obi's intervention was solely to uphold justice and called on Abure to prioritize the party's welfare over personal ambition. "It’s time for Abure to put the interests of the party first, rather than engage in power struggles. We urge him to accept the outcome of the intervention led by Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti to resolve the ongoing misunderstandings," Umar concluded.
