In Omi-Ifon in the Odigbo Local Government area of Ondo State, three clerics have been arrested for allegedly exhuming the corpse of a one-year-old boy, Taiwo Bisiriyu, and using it for ritual purposes.
The clerics, identified as Aliyu Musa, Aliyu Taiye, and Wasiu Babatunde, were taken into custody following the incident, which occurred on Tuesday, July 9.
The tragic events began when young Taiwo Bisiriyu died on Friday, July 5, 2024, and was buried the same day, with the clerics officiating the burial ceremony. However, just a few days later, suspicions arose when unusual activities were reported at the homes of the clerics. According to a report by The Hope, a state-owned newspaper, residents discovered items commonly associated with ritual practices, including a pestle, a mortar, concoctions, a sponge, and a black pot.
Risikat Bisiriyu, the guardian of the deceased child, recounted the harrowing experience: “The boy was ill, and I took him to a Maternity Centre for treatment. He was later referred to the General Hospital in Ore, but on getting there, the boy died. I wept bitterly, which attracted the attention of residents in the area. Since we are Muslims, we decided to bury the boy the same day, and we invited the clerics to officiate."
She continued, “When we got to where the boy would be buried, one of the clerics who carried the corpse went far into the bush to bury him. But the younger brother of the deceased’s father insisted he should bury the child at a particular place, not far inside the bush."
The following Monday, around 10 am, Risikat was approached by the wife of one of the clerics, who expressed concern about a foul smell emanating from her home. Initially dismissing the concern, Risikat later became alarmed when she heard unusual pounding noises from the cleric's house late into the night. The cleric’s wife later confided in her that she suspected her husband had exhumed and mutilated Taiwo’s corpse.
Upon investigating the child's grave, Risikat and other family members discovered it had been disturbed. With the permission of the local Imam, they exhumed the body and found that Taiwo's head and hands had been severed.
