The Lagos police command recently apprehended a man accused of stealing an Uber driver’s car.
According to Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson in Lagos, the incident was reported on July 5 at the Akinpelu police division by the unnamed Uber driver.
The Uber driver recounted that he had picked up a passenger, who identified himself as Isaiah, from the NNPC filling station in Maryland. They travelled to a hotel in the Oshodi area of Lagos in the driver’s Toyota Corolla.
While at the hotel, the suspect bought the driver a plate of pepper soup and an energy drink. During their time together, the suspect requested a cotton bud to clean his ear, and the driver handed him his car key to use for the task. However, after obtaining the key, the suspect went downstairs and drove off with the car.
Fortunately, police officers on a stop-and-search operation at Boladale Street intercepted the suspect. Unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for owning the car, he was arrested on the spot.
The Uber driver arrived as the police were preparing to take the suspect to the station and confirmed the car’s ownership. The suspect has since been detained for further investigation.
