The Lagos State Police successfully arrested two individuals belonging to an armed robbery gang known for their distinctive modus operandi of using pepper spray to rob commercial motorcyclists.
The apprehended suspects, Ayuba Oyegbele and Ojo Gbolahan, targeted a motorcyclist in the Obasanjo Bridge area of Alagbado. Their attempt to snatch the bike was thwarted by vigilant residents who promptly apprehended the duo and handed them over to the police.
SP Ben Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, confirmed the arrests and disclosed that efforts are underway to track down the remaining members of the gang.
"On 15/02/24 at about 07:30 hrs, a report was received from a motorcyclist that at about 06:30 hrs, two men, who were later identified as Ayuba Oyegbele and Ojo Gbolahan stopped him at Ogo Oluwa, Alagbado, that he should take them to Obasanjo bridge,” stated the PPRO.
Hundeyin detailed the assailants' deceptive tactics, explaining, "On getting to the Obasanjo bridge, Ojo Gbolahan came down and pretended as if he wanted to pay the motorcyclist. But instead, he brought out dry pepper and blew it into the rider’s eyes, and in the process, the duo started dragging and beating the rider with the intention of robbing him of his motorcycle."
Fortunately, passers-by intervened upon hearing the distressed cries of the motorcyclist, preventing the robbery. The suspects were subdued, and law enforcement promptly transported them to the Alagbado Police Station.
The arrest serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in combating criminal activities, and the police continue their efforts to apprehend the remaining members of the pepper-spraying robbery gang.
