In a significant move to ease the financial burden on Nigerian travelers during the upcoming festive season, President Bola Tinubu has given his approval for a 50% reduction in the price of interstate transport fare.
The decision, announced by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake, aims to facilitate affordable travel for citizens from Thursday, December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024.
In addition to the substantial price slash for public transport, President Tinubu has also sanctioned free rides for commuters utilizing all train services during the specified period. This announcement was made by Mr. Dele Alake during a briefing with State House Correspondents at the Aso Rock Villa on Wednesday.
According to Alake, the presidential directive is a special intervention designed to make holiday travel more accessible for Nigerians. The discounted fares for mini buses and luxury buses will apply across the country, providing a cost-effective means for citizens to reach their destinations. Simultaneously, all train services operating on their respective routes will be available to travelers at no cost.
The implementation of this initiative involves collaborative efforts between the Federal Government, the Ministry of Transportation, transporters, road transport unions, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation. Mr. Alake assured the public that thorough discussions and engagements have taken place with all relevant stakeholders in the transportation industry. The Minister of Transportation possesses comprehensive details and is actively overseeing the seamless execution of this special presidential intervention.
As the discounted fares and free train rides take effect from December 21, 2023, until January 4, 2024, President Bola Tinubu's decision reflects a commitment to the welfare of Nigerian citizens during the festive season. The collaborative efforts of the government and transportation stakeholders aim to ensure a smooth and accessible travel experience for all those embarking on journeys during this holiday period.
