The former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has voiced support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's government regarding the recent electricity tariff hike.

In a statement made on Sunday, Obi endorsed the increase in electricity tariff for wealthier individuals, aligning with the approach adopted by the current administration.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission recently approved a tariff hike, particularly targeting Band A customers, a move that has sparked various reactions across the nation.

Addressing the issue, Obi emphasized the necessity of such tariff adjustments as a potential solution to Nigeria's longstanding electricity challenges. He argued that increasing tariffs for urban areas capable of bearing the cost is a pragmatic step forward.

According to Obi, "The solution is very simple; you can increase the tariff for those in areas where they can afford it. We must focus on enhancing power generation, acknowledging the prolonged struggle in this sector. However, we must also consider the plight of the majority of Nigerians who are currently facing hardships."

He stressed the importance of supporting individuals in less affluent areas, enabling them to improve their living conditions and contribute to economic productivity. Obi highlighted the significance of transitioning from a consumption-oriented society to one focused on production as a means to alleviate poverty and stimulate sustainable growth.

Obi's stance on the electricity tariff hike reflects a nuanced approach to addressing Nigeria's energy challenges, balancing the need for increased revenue with considerations for socioeconomic equity and national development. As discussions surrounding the tariff hike continue, his perspective adds depth to the ongoing discourse on energy policy in Nigeria.
