In a report titled "Flatally flawed: Why Malaysia must abolish the death penalty" conducted by Amnesty International, AI stated that as of 21st February 2019, 1281 people were facing the death sentence and about 119 out of these were Nigerians convicted of hard drug related offences.
AI found numerous violations of the right to a fair trial at different points of the criminal justice process leaving the defendants vulnerable to the imposition of the death penalty.
