UEFA has appointed Romanian referee István Kovács to officiate the highly anticipated Champions League playoff second leg between Real Madrid and Manchester City on Wednesday night at the Santiago Bernabéu.
This will be the fourth time Kovács has taken charge of a Real Madrid match in the UEFA Champions League. The experienced official previously oversaw:
- Real Madrid’s 5-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the 2024/25 UCL league phase.
- Los Blancos’ 5-2 win against Liverpool in the 2022/23 Round of 16 first leg.
- Real Madrid’s thrilling 4-3 win over Man City in the 2021/22 semifinals first leg.
For the first leg at the Etihad Stadium, French referee Clément Turpin was in charge as Real Madrid edged Man City 3-2, thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Jude Bellingham.
The winner of this two-legged showdown will advance to the Champions League Round of 16.
Stay tuned for an electrifying night of European football! 🚀⚽
