In a surprising last-minute switch, Stuart Attwell has been removed as the referee for Aston Villa’s Premier League showdown against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

The experienced official will now be replaced by Craig Pawson.

Pawson was initially set to referee Monday’s Championship clash between Leeds United and Sunderland at Elland Road. However, following concerns from fans over his alleged support for Sheffield United, he was replaced by Attwell for that fixture. Despite speculation, the UK Mirror confirms the change was purely due to scheduling adjustments and not a conflict of interest.

Now, Pawson will take charge of Villa’s crucial home game against Liverpool at Villa Park.

Liverpool Aiming to Extend Their Lead at the Top

Liverpool, under Arne Slot, are in formidable form, sitting seven points clear at the top of the Premier League. The Reds have dominated the season, winning 18 of their 25 matches, with their only loss coming against Nottingham Forest in September.

Aston Villa Fighting for European Football

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are battling to secure a European spot for the 2025/26 campaign. Currently ninth in the table, they are just five points away from Europa League qualification and six points from a Champions League berth.

With both teams hungry for success, all eyes will be on Villa Park for what promises to be an electrifying encounter.
